History of Oak Knoll

In 1724, the first house in the historic Ralston area was built on what is now Oak Knoll Road on property that was part of a 1713 land grant to the then Clerk of the West Jersey Proprietors, John Wills, a Quaker. Part of the house was subsequently relocated directly across the street from the main entrance to the Oak Knoll neighborhood on Mendham Road/Route 24. In the mid-20th century the original section of the pre-Revolutionary house with its 1724 wing was moved back 1800 feet from its original site. A lovingly restored 1736 bank house remains within the neighborhood.

A small, private family cemetery, the Wills cemetery, now municipally owned, lies at the entrance to the Oak Knoll neighborhood. It is one of the oldest surviving family cemeteries in the region with graves dated 1798 and 1817.

Some of the stone walls running through the Oak Knoll neighborhood are original farm walls that date to the 1820’s.
